Muammar Mohammed Abu Minyar al-Gaddafi, commonly known as colonel Gaddafi was the Libyan head of state before his assassination in 2011, during the Arab revolution. Gaddafi was captured and killed on 20th October 2011, during the battle of Sirte while hiding in a culvert.
Disturbing reports from former female bodyguards have emerged. According to the reports from Malta, Gaddafi and his sons forced themselves on these female guards, and thereafter discarded them.
The flamboyant leader kept a unit of around thirty women whom he referred to as his Amazonian guard unit. This was a peculiar habit he maintained since the early 1970’s. Interestingly, some of these women guards died while protecting him. In a 1998 case, one of his female guards lost her life after deliberately putting herself in the fire line to save her boss. Two other guards sustained serious injuries during that particular attack.
The former strongman in addition to using these women for personal protection, made them take oaths of virginity in addition to making them dress in millitary gear, polished nails and maintaining long uncovered hair. He also ordered them to apply heavy make-up on their faces
Revelations uncovered how these women were used as sex objects moving from the dictator, sons and finally to high ranking officials in that order.Sadly some of these victims could not live with these harrowing experiences and choose to end their lives.
Collection of details for use by the ICC which is investigating possible war crimes by the late leader and his associates is ongoing, and hopefully, justice will prevail for them.
